3. KIKE(swahili for femine.)

The KIKE program is tailor made for girls and young women with specific concentration on the individuals areas of need. This progamme includes:

1. Gender Equity and Equality sensitization program dubbed USAWA (which is equality in swahili).

2. Refferal Services to relevant organisations for Rape victims, gender based/domestic violence victims, sexually transmitted infections, birth, family planning services, vocational training, advanced counselling, HIV testing, HIV management.

3.Urban Agrculture and Nutrition. This includes teaching young women and girls on the importance of nutrition by use of locally available foods and training on improvising space for agriculture to grow e.g vegetables.

4.Promotion of Peace. This includes holding forums and sensitizing the community on the importance and advantages of upholding peace.

5. Education and promotion of Human Rights.

6. Networking and Collaboration with other organisations/stakeholders with similar objectives or are in support of young women and girls.

7. Holding Open Forms for young women and girls to allow free and open discussions regularly.

8. Counselling services.

9. Design and Production of beadwork and Art.

2. T.O.U.C.H.

Teenagers Objectively Unified for Change (TOUCH), is a programme uniquely created by The Change Initiative to address reproductive health among adolecsents. Peer Educators of youthful nature, volunteer to work with adolescents both in an out of school by promoting behavoiur change and aim at fighting myths and misconceptions in a bid to eradicate them.

Touch Methods and Techniques.

1. School outreach Program.

Aim : To teach on reproductive health and life skills.

This is done by peer educators trained by T.C.I who visit learning institutions both primary and high schools in Embakasi constituency on a weekly basis.

2. Camps, Picnics and Hikes.

Aim: Promote team work and socialisation.

By providing a different from usual and comfortable social environment adolescents are able to openly/freely express themselves enhancing both their ability and that of the peer educator. This provides a sense of comfort once they realise the similarity in their issues.

3. Regular group discussions.

Aim: To promote behaviour change.

This is done twice a month.

4. Quarterly talent search competitions.

Aim: To promote and nature talent among adolescents.

Held quarterly with a theme and adolescent participants register to enroll in the competition.

5. Sport and Games.

Aim: To provide and promote positive pass time.

This is a regular activity though due to limited space is reserved to mostly indoor games.

Programmes & Activities

1. Beyond Names.

Beyond Names is an empowerment project by young women in T.C.I that is participatory and revolves around a mentorship concept. It is run by a committee of six aged between twenty one and thirty years (21-30.) all who live in Embakasi constituency and assisted by an advisory board. The committee members previously came from wanting backgrounds and were trained in: Reproductive Health and Life Skills, HIV/AIDS and Home Based Care, Basic Counselling Skills and Enterpreneurship and now come together as a team of competent mentors working with young women and girls aged between thirteen and twenty five(13-25)as their target group in the densely populated Embakasi Constituency.

Why "Beyond Names"

In Kenya, there are forty two ethnic groups each with its unique culture, langauge and names. In the countries history, names have been used to determine ethnic backgrounds and unfortunately branding and stereotyping has seen most people achive such great division. The beyond names committee has its members from different ethnic backgrounds and has concentrated on bringing change and unity among young women and girls irresective.

The Target Group.

Aged between 13 and 25 years the young women and girls include;

1. Adolescens girls in marriage.

2. Adolescent girls in and out of school.

3. Adolescent girls and young women working under risky and unfavourable conditons.(cheap labour market, commercial sex work)

4. Young Widows

5. The Physically impared aolescent girls and young women.

6. Adolescent and young mothers.

7. HIV infected and affected adolescent girls and young women.

8. The internally displaced adolescent girls and young women.

Beyond Names Methods and Techniques.

9. Use of community outreaches and mobilization

Aim: To promote behaviour change.

This includes; Participatory Educative Theatre, Focused Group Discusions, talks by relevant

proffesionals and experinced persons

10. Trainings and workshops.

Aim: To enhance Knowledge and information.

This is done by use of both formal and infoml education methods including lectures,

film shows, picture codes and group discusions.

11. Merry go rounds.

Aim: To promote Enterpreneurship and economic self sustainability.

Merry go rounds are popular and widely accepted by young women. If properly monitored and well

managed they have a record of having provided financial start up capital to micro enterpreneurs.

12. One on one Counselling.

Aim: To provide a channel through which participants share issues for better understanding and advice.

To offer proffesional and informed advice.

This is done at the resource center by competent peer consellors.

13. Job shaddow days.

Aim: To inspire and encourage young women and girls career wise.

This are specific days where each committee member allows a young woman or girl to spend the working day/hours with

her taking time to explain and teach the nature of her job.

Given chance T.C.I shall search oppotunities in the corporate society for job shaddow days.
